Sustainability
This site is built on the principle of digital sufficiency: use the minimum computation, data and infrastructure the work actually needs.
Most of the environmental cost of a website is paid every time someone visits it — in data transferred, in the energy that transfer takes, and in the devices kept busy rendering it. The cheapest page is the one that asks for very little. That principle shaped the architecture here rather than being added afterwards as a badge.
How it is built
- Static HTML and CSS. No content management system, no database, no server-side rendering. Pages are plain files served directly.
- System fonts only. No web fonts are downloaded — not one font file, and nothing loaded from Google Fonts or Adobe Fonts.
- Almost no JavaScript. Under half a kilobyte, inline, doing exactly one job: remembering whether you chose light or dark. Nothing animates, nothing loads on scroll.
- Optimised images. One portrait, served as AVIF with a WebP fallback, sized to the screen asking for it. No background photography, no hero video, no carousels.
- No tracking. No analytics, no advertising trackers, no tag manager, no embedded social feeds, no cookies — and therefore no cookie banner to dismiss.
- Green hosting. Served from infrastructure verified as green by the Green Web Foundation.
An honest claim
This site is described as low-carbon, not carbon-neutral. Every visit uses some energy, and offsetting claims tend to obscure more than they reveal. The aim is straightforward: keep the footprint small, and be transparent about how.
